The government of Viet nam has just promulgated the protocol on the compulsory payment of social insurance provisions for foreign workers working in Viet nam in the social insurance law and the Labour health and safety law.

Specifically, foreign workers who hold the work permit or vocational qualification certificate issued by the functional departments of Vietnam and the labor contract with a fixed term, or the fixed term labor contract with more than one year anniversary must purchase compulsory social insurance.

Employers that participate in compulsory social insurance include state organs, public institutions, political organizations, political-social organizations and other social organizations; Foreign organs, foreign organizations and international organizations operating in Vietnam; Individuals and organizations that employ workers such as enterprises, cooperatives, self-employed persons, cooperative groups and other enterprises that conduct business activities in accordance with law.

According to the protocol, workers who participate in compulsory social insurance participate in the following compulsory social insurance system: medical insurance, maternity insurance, industrial injury insurance, occupational disease insurance, retirement and death payment.
